Software Packages for Vision-Based Control of Motion

A Special Issue of IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine

The hardware needed for vision-based control has been readily available and affordable for several years now. On the other hand, software packages to design vision-based control systems are not as common. In particular, existing computer vision packages are often designed for offline, 2D analysis and are not well suited to real-time image- or position-based control of robots. As such, this special issue seeks contributions on open-source and turnkey software packages appropriate for developing vision-based control systems. Particularly welcomed are papers describing packages that perform real-time vision processing in unstructured environments and that work on commonly available hardware, operating systems and compilers. Also invited are technical and tutorial papers that showcase the capabilities of a given software package. All contributions should go beyond anecdotal uses and address general vision-based control issues. Submissions surveying such software packages, along with papers describing their use in the classroom, are also welcomed.

Paper submissions are limited to 15 pages in LaTeX, including figures and references. The IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine just changed the policy and decided to accept LaTeX contribution as well. Check for updates on it on IEEE Electronic Submission Guidelines: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/pubs/magazines/submit.htm.
